Religions, Women and Discourse of Modernity in Colonial South India

Colonial education and missionary discourse of modernity intensified struggles for continuity change among the followers Hinduism Christianity in nineteenth century India. While was characterised by an emphasis on sociocultural changes marginalized women through Christian norms decency, orthodox Hindus used traditional cultural practices to confront modernization endeavours. This article posits that needs be understood principles Western secular impelled missionaries employ decent clothing as a symbol femininity. It argues not only emboldened challenge their ascribed standing but also solidified communitarian consciousness substantially. Even though Travancore state defended entrenched customary practices, including women’s attire patterns, with all its potency authoritative proclamations, it could dissuade from converting modernity.
